Start with the physical meaning
Pixel pitch is the centre-to-centre distance between adjacent pixels, expressed in millimetres. A smaller number places more pixels into the same physical area, but it is not automatically the right choice for every project.
For a regular LED grid, an early planning estimate is simple:
- Pixels across = screen width in millimetres ÷ pixel pitch
- Pixels high = screen height in millimetres ÷ pixel pitch
- Pixel density per square metre is approximately 1,000,000 ÷ pitch²
For example, P3.9 is about 256 pixels per metre in each direction. A 3 m wide screen is therefore about 769 pixels wide before the actual cabinet and module geometry are considered. The final resolution must always be confirmed from the exact cabinet specification.
Do not choose pitch in isolation
Audience distance, content type, physical screen size, ambient light, camera use and budget all matter. A fine pitch can help a close audience see smaller detail; a larger pitch may be more sensible for a distant audience or a touring screen where weight, handling and available stock are more important.
The useful buying question is not just “What pitch is it?” Ask for the cabinet dimensions, cabinet resolution, module layout, intended viewing distance and source resolution together.
A practical request checklist
- Finished screen width and height
- Nearest and typical viewing distance
- Whether cameras will record the screen
- Content type: text, presentation, live camera or motion graphics
- The exact cabinet model and pixel resolution
