Nits describe luminance
A nit is a unit of luminance, equal to one candela per square metre. It tells you how much light the display can emit, but it does not tell you whether that setting is appropriate for the venue, the content or the camera.
The same product family can offer very different brightness modes for different environments. That makes the application and the actual control range more useful than a single headline number.
Brightness is part of image quality
At the viewing position, image quality also depends on black level, contrast, colour consistency, grayscale performance and ambient reflection. A high setting that is suitable for strong daylight may be uncomfortable or visually harsh in a dim indoor room. Conversely, an underpowered screen can lose contrast when the environment is bright.
Calibration matters because nominally identical modules can vary. Controller tools commonly provide brightness and chroma calibration, full-grayscale calibration and low-grayscale calibration controls. For a used batch, ask what calibration data is present and inspect a low-brightness test, not only a bright showroom image.
Questions to add to a technical brief
- What is the expected ambient light at the screen?
- What brightness range is available on the exact cabinets?
- Is the screen used indoors, behind glass or in direct outdoor light?
- Can the seller show uniform grey, white, red, green and blue at the intended operating level?
- Are calibration files and the matching control configuration available?
